Geocache Description:

One of our many caches along the Mountain-Bay State Trail.

Captain America is the superhero creation of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. The character first appeared in Captain America Comics #1, dated March 1941, but released for sale in late December 1940. It was published by Timely Comics, a predecessor of Marvel Comics. The first Issue sold over one million copies, and outsold even popular news magazines like Time. Captain America was designed as a patriotic super-soldier during World War II, a year into the war but also a full year before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Remaining very popular through the 1940s, the character went out of print in 1950, coming back for a brief revival in 1953. In 1964, Marvel Comics brought the character back for good, and Captain America ranks in the Top 10 Superheroes of all time. I'm not making this up. There's a list.

The first Issue showed Captain America, the alter-ego of frail young Steve Rogers who was brought to the peak of human perfection by an experimental serum to aid the United States Government in it's fight against the Axis of Evil, punching out Adolf Hitler. Also pictured is his trusty sidekick, "Bucky", who is nowhere near the top 100 superheroes of all time. The shape of his shield is unique in Issue 1, and was replaced with a new design for Issue 2 a few months later. The Costume for Captain America has seen very little change over the years.

Today, Captain America still spends most of his time leading a bunch of mutants and even a god or two in the never-ending battle against evil and ultimate dominion. Not bad for the son of poor Irish immigrants, who is now nearly 100 years old (Steve Rogers was born in the 1920's).

Fight on, Captain America, fight on.
