Iron Man first appeared in Tales of Suspense #39, dated march of 1963. Not satisfied with a gray-hued superhero, the design team of Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, Don Heck and Jack Kirby brought him back in solid gold for Issue #40, and finally in December of 1963 in the more familiar Red and Gold suit of armor in Tales of Suspense #48, where he battled the Great Mr. Doll. (Super-villains weren't always the caliber you see nowadays.)
Iron Man appeared occasionally in Tales of Suspense, getting more fan mail from women than men, because he was a character invincible on the outside, but highly vulnerable on the inside, suffering from depression, alcoholism, and other inner demons. That aura of vulnerability made him a fan favorite among female audiences.
Iron man finally got his due, becoming the titular character in "The Invincible Iron Man #1 in May of 1968, where he was given the cognomen of "The Golden Avenger". He's been flying high and kicking butt ever since, in one alternate universe or another, ranking #3 on the Top 50 list of Avengers.
Which brings us to the present, or the future, at least in this universe. Seems like Tony Stark is hanging up his psionically controlled liquid smart-metal Venom symbiote exo-armor and passing the torch to a 15-year-young African American girl named Riri Williams. So Iron MAN is now - well, only time will tell.
