Geocache Description:

The Geology of the Leschenault Peninsula

The peninsula is a place of extremes with an exposed, windswept ocean shoreline on one side and a protected tranquil estuarine shore on the other.

Leschenault Peninsula is an 11km long, finger-like projection that separates the Indian Ocean from the Estuary, varying in width from 600m to 1600m, and covers an area of 1071 hectares.

The sands of the Leschenault Peninsula are windblown remnants of a 7000 thousand year old oceanic sand barrier that continues to move eastward. This shifting sand dune barrier which is many metres thick extends North from the peninsula to include Lake Preston in Yalgorup National Park. Beneath the dunes is an older layer of river sediments that have been buried beneath the advancing wind-blown ocean sands.
