Torre del Carmine o Torre dell'orologio (XII-XIII Century)
E’ una della sei torri rimaste delle venticinque esistenti in epoca medioevale e precedenti la distruzione del paese ad opera delle truppe fiorentine del Granduca Cosimo dei Medici avvenuta a seguito dell’assedio del 1554. Si tratta di una struttura, che svolgeva una funzione esclusivamente militare, situata in posizione dominante verso la pianura. Questa torre costituiva il perno difensivo detto “Castel Nuovo” in contrapposizione a quello preesistente posto sull’altra altura nella parte nord del paese. Da documenti del 1552 risulta che sul lato nord della torre, in modo da essere visibile a tutto il paese, si trovava, come ancora adesso, un orologio. Ricostruito nel 1695 è tuttora conservato nella torre, con alcune aggiunte elettriche apportate nel corso del ventesimo secolo nel tentativo di modernizzare il funzionamento. Nel 1732 le autorità comunali decisero di far aggiungere un quadrante esterno all’orologio. Nel 1843 venne deciso di sostituire la suoneria con una nuova detta “alla romana” e cioè “all’antico sistema di battere le ore di 6 in 6”. Il quadrante in marmo con 6 cifre romane, indicate da una lancetta di lamiera sagomata, è quello apposto nel 1844.

Tower of the Carmine or Tower of the Watch (XII-XIII Century)
It is one of the six towers left from the twentyfive towers existing during the medieval age and antecedent to the destruction of the village by the florentine troups of the Grand Duke Cosimo dei Madici that happened after the 1554′ siege. The structure which had an exclusive military function, is situated in dominant position in direction of the plain. This tower was the defensive hinge known as “New Castle” in contraposition to the pre-existent tower built on the other edge in the north part of the village. From 1552’s records it results that on the north side of the tower there was, so that it could be visibile to all the village, a tower watch. Reconstructed in 1695 it’s still preserved in the tower, with some electrical modification done during the XXth century in order to bring the clock-work up to date. In 1732 the town council decided to add an external dial to the tower watch. In 1843 the bell was replaced with a new one called “in the roman way”, which means “the old way to strike the hours every six”. The marble dial with six roman numerals and shaped plate hand have been placed in 1844.
