Origins of the Vampire: Vanquished Letterbox Hybrid

This cache has been archived.

AddHam: Came out to do maintenance and saw that someone posted No Tress passing signs all over the place where they weren't before. Rather than get into a dispute or have someone get arrested at one of our caches, we decided it was just easier to take this series out of commission. Too bad it was an early departure.

Geocache Description:

The myth of vampires has soaked itself into our lives and has saturated our pop culture for decades. You may want to think that vampires can be sexy and sparkly or be correct by thinking vampires are horrifying and demonic. Either way, you have seen the movies, heard the stories, and pretty much know all the hallmarks of these dark creatures. But do you know the origins of the vampiric characteristics? This year’s Hallowed Series attempts to explain the facts behind the myths...purely for educational purposes, of course. If you’re just in it for the smiley’s then go find the caches. However, if you’re into the lessons, read the cache pages along with the texts at the cache locations in the following order: Attack, Awareness, Vanquished, and finally, Transformation. Good luck.

(continued from Origins of the Vampire: AWARENESS) ...The Upir were so feared that the person’s family would go dig up the bodies of the recently deceased and mutilate it. They would burn them. Put stakes facing down so if they tried to crawl up, they would stab themselves. They would bury them face down so that when they woke at night they would be crawling into the wrong direction. Also, since the heart (and not the brain) was thought of at the time to be the center of one’s being, people would drive a stake into the body’s heart. This was also to help nail them down in place.
For about 1000 years, this practice grew popularity through central and eastern Europe. It was usually found through records to be associated with the outbreak of disease. Even in the 1850’s, during a tuberculosis epidemic in Conneticut of all places, people panicked and dug up their loved one’s graves and burned their hearts!

So, it is your turn. You’ve already seen the evidence of vampiric activity in the woods around these caches. You’ve felt the attack when the creature descended upon you. Now, you must seek the Upir out. Find it at night by picking up the reflectors at the posted coordinates. The reflectors are spaced far apart and you will not see the next one until you get to an intersection in the trail. Bring a good, bright flashlight. Follow these directions until you you see a pair reflectors, you’ll need to follow them from tack to tack until you come to 3 firetacks. The Upir will be close by. Be ready.
