Geocache Description:

Another Roadside Attraction Geotrail

South Carolina - Congaree National Park

There is nothing better than a good road trip: driving down the open road, eating at tiny roadside diners, going 150 miles out of the way to take a selfie in front of … the Peachoid water tower! Oh Say, can you see … me with the world’s largest frying pan?

This geotrail honors those unique, odd, bizarre, fun, historic, campy, weird, and just downright interesting roadside attractions in North and South Carolina. The caches aren’t meant to be hard, it is a power-trail after all. None of the caches are hidden at the posted locations - but answer the question correctly and you will have a working set of coordinates. All of the hides are preform bottles.

Congaree National Park, a 22,200 acre preserve which contains the largest contiguous area of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest remaining in the United States and is one of the tallest broad-leafed forests in the world with thousands of trees over 130 feet tall.  Many of the trees are over 200 years old.  Bald Cypress, Tupelo, Sweet Gum, Ash, and Oak make up the stand of swampy forest.  Many visitors come to the park to try and find evidence of the majestic Ivory Billed Woodpecker, once common across the South, are now most likely extinct due to habitat destruction.  In fact, the last official sighting of the Ivory Billed Woodpecker was in 1944. Rumors often stir among ornithologist about sightings or calls heard and after extensive investigation the elusive birds never turn up.  But if a few pairs of the Ivory Bills were to turn up it would be in habitat similar to that of Congaree.  Take a kayak and plan on camping out - who knows you may discover the rebirth of the Ivory Billed woodpecker.
