North Carolina - Final Shot of the Civil War Monument

There is nothing better than a good road trip: driving down the open road, eating at tiny roadside diners, going 150 miles out of the way to take a selfie in front of … the Peachoid water tower! Oh Say, can you see … me with the world’s largest frying pan?

This geotrail honors those unique, odd, bizarre, fun, historic, campy, weird, and just downright interesting roadside attractions in North and South Carolina. The caches aren’t meant to be hard, it is a power-trail after all. None of the caches are hidden at the posted locations - but answer the question correctly and you will have a working set of coordinates. All of the hides are preform bottles.

On May 7, 1865, nearly a month after Appomattox, the Army of Western North Carolina surrendered.  The surrender followed a small skirmish, a truce was called and the noble cause was finished.  A monument was erected by a local group in 1923 marking the spot, where “the last shot of the War Between the States” was fired - a claim that was immediately disputed by other “last shots” fired spots across the US.  The monument was originally surrounded by a park, but the park is now gone and the monument stands in the corner of someones yard.  This particular Last Shot was deemed worthy of a monument because it was fired by a Rebel, a point of pride, I suppose.
