Happy Caching!

Back in the mid 70's, my friend's mom and dad owned the gravel pit that is located on the East side of Five Lakes Road. It was never "officially" listed as a gravel pit.... it was just part of the acreage they owned. In fact, it was more of an "honor system" wherein, trucks would come (with their own loader) and take the sand they needed.......pull back over to the farm, pay for what they took...and be on their way. It was purchased by Starr Aggregates in 1990, the entrance on Five Lakes Road was blocked off and the new entrance was created on Imlay City Road (M-21). As kids, we were allowed to play there and would do so when given the chance.  One such opportunity came the night of my friend's birthday party during our 6th grade year at Attica Elementary. Needless to say, when the time was right, we all ran to the pit to climb the hills.  I was sporting a beautiful green and white polyester pant suit that my mother had made and had one specific instruction: "do NOT get dirty."  You see, it was Friday night, and Friday night was bowling night at The (former) Lapeer Lanes and I usually went with them. Never will I forget watching my mom and dad pull in with their 1972 beige Plymouth Valiant and rumble towards 12 screaming kids sliding down a hill of pure dust.  Needless to say, my dad laughed.......my mother, not so much.  As a kid, I didn't get why she was horrified taking me somewhere looking like Pig Pen from Snoopy & Friends (dumping ROCKS and dirt from my shoes). Best birthday party, ever!!  lol :{    I get it now.
