Initially Akhaltsikhe is believed to be called "Lomisa" and was destroyed during the heavy battles of XI century. According to the historical records the city was restored at the beggining of XII century and was named as Akhaltsikhe (new fortress). Since then the city was an important political center and crossing point for caravans and traders. This is highly recomend you to visit Akhaltsikhe Fortress Complex combining Samtskhe-Javakheti Museum, palace, church, mosque and other interesting touristic objects as hotels, cafes, restaurants, an information center, and even a marriage hall. It is a very beautiful place for a wedding ceremony and a romantic photo shooting, indeed!
The reason why I placed here a geocache is the place is really worth to stop here during your travel on the southern part of Samtskhe-Javakheti region, visit the Fortress and admire from the highest spot (tower) beautiful landmarks of the city Akhaltsikhe surroundings. Cache has been placed behind the Museum, accessible from 10am to 6pm Tuesday to Sunday. There is no need to visit the Museum in order to grab the cache. Simply walk around the stony wall of the museum east direction till you reach a small tower with door. Go thru the door to garden terrace, you will have a low rock on your left side. Search here for small size plastic container. Entrance fee has been started to collect since 2019 5 lari for single person admission. Good luck.
