La porta di accesso alla città storica di Sansepolcro che volge verso Firenze, prende il Nome di Porta Fiorentina.
La porta è tutt’oggi ben visibile con un grosso arco sulle mura storiche che difendevano la città. Il portone è stato rimosso, ma si vedono evidenti i grossi cardini che una volta lo sorreggevano.
Dalla porta si sviluppa il “Corso”, la via principale che taglia la città e che attraversa tutto il centro storico, passando per la piazza principale, Piazza Torre di Berta, e infine arrivare all’altra porta opposta, Porta Romana volta verso Roma. L’arco è preso a riferimento dai Borghesi come punto di ritrovo e di indicazione ….. ci se vede sotto l’arco de Porta Fiorentina … si sente spesso dire.
Porta Fiorentina da il nome al quartiere dai colori Bianco e Viola, che si contrappone al Rione di Porta Romana (colori Rosso e Giallo). La divisione tra i due rioni è la Piazza Torre di Berta e le vie principali che partono da essa: Via Giacomo Matteotti verso nord-est e Via della Fraternita verso sud-ovest.
Ogni cittadino di Sansepolcro appartiene a uno dei due rioni in base alla parte della città in cui è nato e cresciuto nell’infanzia.
Varie sono le tipologie di sfida che negli anni hanno visto contrapposti i due rioni, dalla storica partita di calcio degli anni 60-70, al tiro alla fune durante la festa di San Rocco. A oggi la rivalità tra i due rioni, è sentita specialmente durante le manifestazioni del Palio della Balestra, dove, durante la settimana che precede il Palio con gli amici di Gubbio, si svolge una gara di tiro con la Balestra tra i due rioni, in costume rievocativo Rinascimentale, con una particolare e avvincente formula uno contro uno. Questa gara è molto sentita sia dai Balestrieri, che dai Borghesi, che normalmente partecipano numerosi, colorati e chiassosi, avendo in palio una delle cose più importanti che può esserci nei borghi toscani, la possibilità di sfottere gli avversari per tutto il resto dell’anno.
Il rione di Porta Fiorentina è diviso in due quartieri : Santa Caterina con i colori Blu e Amaranto e San Bartolomeo con i colori Nero e Ocra, che rappresentano rispettivamente il quadrante sopra il Corso e sotto il Corso.
