Geocache Description:

This EarthCache is at Full Fathom Five, an art installation in the Port Marina in Portishead, North Somerset, created by artist Michael Dan Archer. It consists of 108 granite pillars of differing heights arranged in a long wave atop a mound. Some of the pillars are inscribed with quotes and phrases.

This EarthCache explores the properties of the granite used in Full Fathom Five.

Granite is an igneous rock composed of a variety of minerals, each with differing sized crystallised minerals, big enough to see with the naked eye. These crystals form from the slow crystallization of magma below Earth's surface. This is what gives granite its unique, crystalline nature.

The composition (particular amounts of specific minerals) determines that granite's colour; in this case it is a grey due to high amounts of quartz. Granites contain crystals of other minerals such as feldspar, orthoclase and mica.

Granite is often used as a building material because it is both aesthetically pleasing to look at and is also more resistant to erosion by acid rain and mosses than sedimentary type rocks, which means it will endure less damage and ultimately last longer. To claim this Earthcache, you must complete the following tasks. Please email or message me the answers via my profile, don't include your answers in your log. Any answers that are drastically wrong or incomplete, or posted logs that reveal answers will be deleted.

1. Observe one of the pillars close-up. What are the size of the crystals and what colours can you see? Using the chart above, name some of the minerals in the granite (apart from quartz).

2. Are the pillar sides rough or smooth? Are the tops the same or different?

3. At the listed coordinates (GZ) you will see a granite stone that is different from the others. Give at least two ways in which it differs.

4. TO PROVE YOU VISITED: Directly behind the different stone at GZ, you will see a 6 word phrase etched into the pillar. What is the phrase?

Taking photos is encouraged, but not compulsory. Please try not to reveal answers in your photos, especially for #4. If your photos are revealing, then they shall be deleted.
