La Bastide a été fondée en 1267 par Alphonse de Poitiers, comte de Toulouse, frère et féal du roi Louis IX (alias Saint-Louis) sur un terrain concédé par Gaston de Gontaud, seigneur de Biron.
La bastide fut occupée par les Anglais de 1279 à 1453 (fin de la Guerre de Cent Ans), puis par les Protestants en 1569 et 1572.
Au centre de la ville et à quelques pas de la halle centrale, l’église Notre-Dame constitue un monument d’exception. L’église a été construite en même temps que la bastide soit à partir de1265, dans un style gothique à contreforts.
Ses grandes dimensions et ses contreforts en font une véritable forteresse avec ses deux tourelles carrées reliées par un chemin de ronde crénelé. Elle répondait à deux vocations : lieu de culte et ultime refuge. Elle était entourée d’un fossé profond et, pour y pénétrer il fallait franchir un pont-levis. Elle communiquait avec un fort où logeait le baillé (bailli en patois de l’époque), chargé d’administrer la bastide. Plusieurs fois attaqué il fut entièrement rasé en 1794
Elle a été pillée et incendiée par les protestants le 25 octobre 1572, à titre de «remerciement» pour la Saint Barthélémy. L’église renferme aussi quelques beaux saints en bois sculpté.

In the center of the city and a few steps from the Central Hall, the Church of our Lady is a monument of exception. The Church was built as part of the bastide is from de1265, in a Gothic style to foothills.
Its large size and its foothills make a real fortress with its two square towers connected by a walkway castellated. She answered two vocations: place of worship and ultimate refuge. It was plundered and burned by protestants on 25 October 1572, as a "thank you" for the Saint Barthélemy. The Church contains also some beautiful saints carved wood.
