The rural communities of Rio Linda and Elverta have many barn quilts, and more are being added each month. Traditional quilts are made of geometric pieces of fabric sewn together to create a quilt. Applique quilts use shapes sewn onto, or applied, to the top of another piece of fabric. Barn quilts are made of plywood sheets with paint applied by hand, using the same geometric or applique shapes. There are thousands of "named" or recognized quilt blocks, you may have heard of a few very popular ones like: Log Cabin, Flying Geese, Birds in Air and Wagon Wheel. Barn Quilts, come in all sizes, most are 4'x4', but some are much larger and some much smaller. Barn quilts represent something special to the property owner, such as a last name, a passion, or a lifestyle. We've chosen 8 locations to help show the diversity and beauty of these quilts.

While driving around the community to find your answers, please: obey traffic rules and do not block roadways or driveways. If you see a property owner, please say Hi, point to the quilt or at least wave. Most owners are used to people stopping to admire their quilt. You may find it easier to take a photo of each quilt and then answer the questions.
