Cloudland Canyon State Park sits on Lookout Mountain in the NW corner of the state of Georgia. There is a $5 daily entrance fee, unless you are a member of the Friends of Georgia State Parks!
This cache is a camo'd waterproof plastic container along the trail to the lower entrance to Sitton's Cave. Trail to the cave leaves from the right side of the parking lot, near the gate. Sturdy walking shoes for minor rock-hopping as you approach the cave are essential. You do NOT have to leave the trail or do any climbing to reach this one!
Because you are down in a canyon, and under the cave overhang, GPS signal will bounce. Coordinates are averaged from 6 different readings, all within 15-22 feet. Be mindful that many creatures enjoy being near water and take usual precautions against snakes. Hiking stick and bug spray are highly recommended.
You will feel the cave wind as you approach. You will NOT descend into the cave at all ! Cache is in a log right along the trail, BEFORE you would have any opportunity to descend. Please note that actual 'spelunking' is not involved or permitted.
Sitton's Cave is a horizontal river cave composed of slick and fragile limestone. Please note and follow all instructions posted at the parking lot about this cave. Both the regulations of Cloudland Canyon State Park and the Georgia Cave Protection Act of 1977 prohibit entry into any cave without formal permission. To reach the cache, it is not necessary to encounter the muddy interior of the cave at all! Do NOT enter the actual cave or go beyond the overhang.
If you are interested in an authorized 'wild cave tour' of Sitton's Cave, please contact Georgia Girl Guides. They are the only licensed caving concessionaire of Cloudland Canyon State Park. However, no tour or equipment is required to find and log this cache.
Placed with permission of the park manager and park naturalist.
Please take care to understand the basic rules of geocaching in order to help keep the game enjoyable for all who participate. Please do not move or vandalize the container. Replace the cache exactly where you found it.
Sign the log book and leave it in the cache. If you want to take any of other items in the cache, they are there for trade; be sure to leave something of equal or greater value, but don't leave any kind of food items, or anything that is highly aromatic, which could attract critters/creatures/rodents/bugs!
All trails (and the Sitton Gulch gated parking area) in Cloudland Canyon State Park close at sunset. This is a daylight-only find.
Please note you will drive through a residential area on your way to the well-marked parking area and trailhead. Please be respectful and do not park in driveways or along roads.
Enjoy your visit at the park and remember to re-hide the cache like or better than you found it and practice, "Leave No Trace." While visiting any Georgia State Park, please obey all park rules and remain on the marked trails as you make your way to find the geocaches!
