ENGLISH

On the night of the 2nd of August 1843, the Rebecca Rioters attaked Furnace tollgate. The Rebecca Rioters were a group of rioters that protested against the expensive toll gates in South West Wales at this time. The thatched toll gate was burnt to the floor and the gate was thrown in the Afon Cille next door to the Stradey Arms. They were shouting and creating mess and havock in Furnace village that night. There is a blue plack on the site of the toll gate where Furnace village shop is now built.
