
The zoo had bear pits constructed in 1905 and 1908. The photo above was taken in 1942. A new bear exhibit opened in 1957 and was then renovated in 1967. This renovation helped Assiniboine Park Zoo establish the "Manitoba Standard", which was recognized as the best way to treat bears in captivity at the time. The old bear exhibit is now part of our Polar Bear Rescue Program, and the creation of Journey to Churchill in 2014 helps put the zoo back on the map for the best polar bear care practices.
