On Costa Rica's southern Pacific coast, Piedras Blancas National Park is a natural reserve & wildlife refuge created to protect the only remaining lowland tropical rainforest in Golfo Dulce. Much of the area was privately owned and deforested for logging purposes. Bounded by rugged mountains shaped by the Esquinas Piedras Blancas Rivers, the park has striking beaches & coral reefs nearby providing excellent places to snorkel & swim. The creation of this park marked a huge victory for conservationists as much of the area had been previously damaged by deforestation & hunting. The park offers exploration of its meandering trails, thriving rainforests, immaculate beaches, winding rivers, & powerful waterfalls.
The park is home to hundreds of rare plant, animal, & insect species, including five species of cats - the ocelot, margay, jaguarundi, puma, & jaguar. But, it's unlikely visitors will meet these felines, as they tend to be both elusive & nocturnal. They may be able to find toucans & scarlet macaws, kinkajous coatis, white-faced capuchin spider monkeys, as well as the two-toed sloth, anteater, & 50+ species of bats. With 300+ species of birds recorded & an important gathering point for many birds from North South America, the park is considered to be one of the best bird watching areas. Snakes & frogs abound too, but some are unknown. The most common snake & unfortunately the most dangerous - is the fer-de-lance, although coral snakes, boa constrictors, vine snakes & pit vipers may be spotted too. One may find red-eyed leaf frogs, poison-arrow frogs, tree frogs, rain frogs, glass frogs & cane toads, or see caimans in the park ponds & crocodiles in the rivers & mangrove swamps. Research in the park is ongoing, as there are still many unidentified plant & animal species.
