Geocache Description:

While I was on the way to another cemetery I came across this one.  Looked into the history for this one. It has a very interesting  history.

The Hickory Grove Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in Lackawanna County , PA. Established in Waverly, then called Abington Center, in 1807, the cemetery includes a section of burials of former slaves who came to the area via the Underground Railroad in the 1840's. Many of these graves are now unmarked, however.

During the latter half of the 19th Century, Waverly was an important stopping point for many freedom seeking African Americans. Many of these former slaves (mainly from MD and VA) settled in Waverly and established a small community in the town for more than 97 years. (At one time there were about 75 African Americans living in the village with a population of about 300 or so.) The burials at Hickory Grove Cemetery are silence witness to the struggle to end slavery in the US.

Although the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania dedicated and placed a historical marker there, it has yet been listed on the PA historical marker site.

Please be respectful of the area you're in, replace as found, BYOP and NO night caching.
