Domenica 17 ottobre, durante le giornate del FAI, sono stato a visitare questo mitico impianto di cui tanto avevo sentito parlare, semplice, storico, immerso nella nuova area moderna di City Life, interessante …. dedichiamogli una nuova cache e la sera sono passata a depositarla.

Il Velodromo Vigorelli nasce nel 1935. Il Velodromo Sempione, ormai obsoleto, è stato demolito nel 1928 e bisogna liberare il Palazzo dello Sport da una delle sue numerose funzioni. L'idea di un velodromo semicoperto poco distante dal vecchio Sempione è di Giuseppe Vigorelli, industriale, assessore sotto la giunta Mangiagalli, e in gioventù corridore su pista. Il Vigorelli diventa da subito un prestigioso punto di riferimento per la passione sportiva dei milanesi e degli abitanti dei paesi circostanti, che ne affollano le tribune per assistere alle gare di sprint, di inseguimento, alle corse all'americana, alle gare degli stayer e ai grandi incontri di boxe sul ring al centro del prato. La sua pista scorrevolissima attira corridori da tutto il mondo. E' teatro di sfide memorabili, record mondiali, campionati, è sede d'arrivo di importanti corse su strada, il Giro d'Italia, il Giro di Lombardia e il Trofeo Baracchi.
Da semplice impianto sportivo diventa un luogo mitico, vero e proprio tempio del ciclismo internazionale. I paragoni si sprecano: la "Scala" del ciclismo, lo 'Stradivari' delle piste. Le fotografie dei campioni affollano le pareti dei piccoli bar della Bullona e del Sempione, il vecchio "borg di scigolatt", dove sorge il Velodoromo. L'aura di leggenda che lo circonda sovrasta quasi quella degli stessi primattori che si sfidano sul parquet della pista. Dall'officina di Faliero Masi, che ha per tetto una gradinata del Velodromo, escono le biciclette dei maggiori campioni della strada e della pista. Al Vigorelli corrono i campioni e i ragazzini che imparano ad andare in bicicletta e i milanesi riservano lo stesso entusiasmo agli uni e agli altri, affollando lo stadio anche per le competizioni minori.
Nell'estate del 1944, durante la seconda guerra mondiale, una pioggia di bombe incendiarie cade su Milano. Il Vigorelli è colpito, la pista distrutta. Verrà ricostruito nel 1945 per riprendere la sua storia fatta di corse, campionati, record.
Con la ripresa post bellica, negli anni 1951, 1955 e 1962 vi si svolsero nuovamente i campionati mondiali di ciclismo su pista, in un periodo in cui il ciclismo su pista era molto popolare e seguito in Italia.
Nel dopoguerra il velodromo ha ospitato anche eventi non sportivi: il 24 giugno 1965 vi ebbe luogo un'esibizione dei Beatles e nel 1971 la tristemente nota serata dei Led Zeppelin caratterizzata da scontri tra pubblico e polizia che causarono la fine del concerto dopo solo pochi minuti e la totale distruzione del palco e della strumentazione della band.
Alla scomparsa del campione Antonio Maspes (19 ottobre 2000) l'Amministrazione comunale decise di dedicargli il velodromo che da allora si chiama velodromo Maspes-Vigorelli.
“Ed ha riaperto a giugno 2016. Posizionato in via Arona ang. via Giovanni da Procida, il 27 giugno 2016 ha concluso i lavori di manutenzione straordinaria. A partire dalle ore 10 gruppi diversi di pista , uomini e donne, hanno iniziato a testare la storica pista, fino alle ore 12. Alle ore 11 è sceso in pista anche il campione Francesco Moser con la sua storica bicicletta del record dell’ora del 1986. Per l’occasione, il campione ha riabbracciato il suo storico rivale, Gianni Motta.”
Il restauro ha interessato paraboliche e rettilinei sui quali sono stati utilizzati i materiali originali degli anni ’50 e ’60 (legno d’abete della Val di Fiemme). Per la futura manutenzione la Magnifica Comunità della Val di Fiemme ha piantumato un’area montana ribattezzata ‘Bosco Vigorelli’: i suoi alberi saranno destinati esclusivamente al velodromo milanese.
La pista è di 397,7 metri, con una larghezza di 7,50 m. La pendenza massima in curva è di 42 gradi. La pista è ricoperta con 72 chilometri di listarelle di pino di Svezia.
Da settembre sarà un velodromo metropolitano aperto a tutti. All’interno si succederanno attività legate al ciclismo e ad altri sport, anche il football americano. Con la nuova riqualificazione potrà ospitare oltre 7.000 persone.

The Vigorelli Velodrome was founded in 1935. The Velodrome Sempione, now obsolete, it was demolished in 1928 and you have to release the Sports Palace from one of its main functions. The idea of a velodrome semicoperto not far from the old Sempione is by Giuseppe Vigorelli, industrial, councilor under the junta Mangiagalli, and runner youth track. From simple sports facility it becomes a mythical place, a real temple of international cycling. Comparisons abound: the "Scala" of cycling, the 'Stradivari' of the slopes. The sample photographs crowding the walls of the small Bullona bars and the Simplon, the old "Borg of scigolatt", where stands the Velodoromo. The aura of legend that surrounds it dominates almost that of the same main actors who will compete on the floor of the track. From the workshop of Faliero Masi, who has a roof Velodrome stairs, out the bikes of the biggest champions of the road and the track. The disappearance of the sample Antonio Maspes (19 October 2000) the City Council decided to dedicate the velodrome that since then is called Maspes-Vigorelli velodrome.

The restoration involved parabolic and straights on which were used original materials from the 50's and 60's (fir wood of the Val di Fiemme). The track is 397.7 meters, with a width of 7.50 m. The maximum in the curve slope is about 42 degrees. The track is covered with 72 kilometers of pine strips of Sweden.
From September it will be a metropolitan velodrome open to all. Inside it will succeed activities related to cycling and other sports, even American football. With the new redevelopment will accommodate over 7,000 people.
