Geocache Description:

Church Micro 742...Shrub End

All Saints' Shrub End, so called from the former Shrub wood, was built in 1845 by George Russell French, to serve a new parish for the growing population of Stanway and Lexden. The church is constructed of hard red brick with caen stone dressings and consists of the nave, chancel and low tower with splay-foot spire over the north porch. The organ chamber was added in 1883 and the south choir vestry in 1958. In 1982 the nave was extended to the west and contains portraits of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. Fittings include a marble and gold mosaic memorial to Edward Coope Fulcher who died in 1880 by John Hardman and Co.; a stained glass window on the south side of the nave by Cox and Sons in 1878 which is a memorial to John Smith Dolby, first incumbent and another by James Powell and Sons which is a memorial to Edith M.M. Scarman who died 1930. There is a wall monument to Thomas Joseph Turner of Little Olivers, Stanway who died 1866, by L. J. Watts of Colchester. This is a significant church by a well-known London architect who also had Essex connections, with addresses in Wanstead and Leytonstone.

The tower contains a light ring of 6, cast in 1962 by Mears and Stainbank at the Whitechapel Foundry in London. The tenor weighs 4-1-14 cwt (490lbs or 222kg) and this makes them the 3rd lightest ringable bells in Essex. Only Hadstock (6 bells 2-3-13) and Rochford (8 bells 4-0-9) are lighter
