Santa Maria della Pace a Sigliano Traditional Cache

La chiesa di Santa Maria della Pace è un edificio sacro che si trova in località Sigliano a Pieve Santo Stefano.

La chiesa, terminata e consacrata nel 1921 dal vescovo di Sansepolcro monsignor Pompeo Ghezzi. La struttura è un curioso esempio di eclettismo architettonico in stile neobizantino. È sorta sul luogo occupato un tempo dall'antica pieve di Sigliano, dedicata a San Pietro fino al XVI secolo e poi ricordata come pieve di Santa Maria (1566). Nel 1593 passò sotto il patronato dei conti di Montedoglio e dei nobili Della Stufa e nel 1797 venne eretta a prepositura dal vescovo di Sansepolcro monsignor Roberto Costaguti.

Nel sottosuolo del vetusto luogo di culto fu ritrovato un cippo funerario con iscrizione latina, ora sistemato nelle scale d'ingresso al nuovo tempio, segno che nel medesimo posto si è pregato prima per gli dei pagani e poi per il Dio cristiano. La struttura è un curioso esempio di eclettismo architettonico in stile neobizantino ed è insignita del titolo di Basilica Minore.

Oltre alla bella chiesetta, si può godere del panorama sulla Valtiberina e sul lago di Motedoglio.

The church of Santa Maria della Pace is a sacred building is located in the locality Sigliano in Pieve Santo Stefano.
The church was completed and consecrated in 1921 by the bishop of Sansepolcro Monsignor Pompeo Ghezzi. The structure is a curious example of architectural eclecticism in the neo-Byzantine style. It is built on the site once occupied by the ancient Sigliano parish church, dedicated to St. Peter until the sixteenth century and later remembered as the parish church of Santa Maria (1566). In the basement of the venerable place of worship it was found a memorial stone with a Latin inscription, now placed in the entrance stairs to the new temple, a sign that in the same place we prayed earlier to the pagan gods and then to the Christian God.
