Stockyard Plain is a broad, low-lying area located 15 km southwest of Waikerie. In the early 1980s a series of shallow gypsum-rich depressions within this plain were identified as a prospective site for a disposal basin for the Woolpunda Saltwater Interception Scheme.
The Disposal Basin is around 3 - 4 kms N-E of this rest stop and for a time was accessible to visitors for camping and viewing wild-life and birds but is now closed to the public.
The rest stop is safely located in a pull-off area, well off the highway. The cache container, a 1litre sistema container is hidden a short distance from the shelter.
