Geocache Description:

The drive to this cache will provide a scenic and peaceful drive of one to two hours, visiting a quiet and little-know part of Perak. You will see oil palm plantations, remnants of rubber plantations, a shallow gurgling river, swimming holes, Orang Asli villages and farming areas.

As the area is quite remote, we will give you instructions that might help you to not get lost. You will need your own transport, as public tranport does not come out this far, though the very adventurous (and fit) might try walking and public transport.

From Ipoh, take Jalan Tambun and drive towards Tanjun Rambutan.

Pass the Lost World of Tambun and Banjaran Hot Springs on your right.

Look for the temples in the caves high on the hillside to your left. One has the largest (and only) LED ticker tape we have ever seen on a temple.

Look out for the big mosque (Masjid An-nur Batu 8) ahead on your right. When you see this, you need to turn right at the traffic lights BEFORE the mosque. The road is marked A182 on google maps. Follow this road all the way to the end. There is a dam ahead, but it's not open to the public.

Turn left before the gates to the dam and cross the narrow bridge over the river. From here, the road is very narrow. Please be careful and watch out for motorcycles, of which there may be many at first. Also watch out for trucks in palm oil harvesting season. Drive slowly, especially at sharp bends, and when the road gets very narrow, be careful to stay on the road.

As soon as you get to the Orang Asli village, turn right. The Orang Asli are the indigenous people of the Malay peninsula and many live in villages like this one. Your turn will take you straight out of the village and through many oil palm plantations. Stay on this road and don't be tempted to take any of the detours up the hill! Many of the trees closest to the road are rubber trees. We didn't see any being tapped, but if you look carefully, many of the older ones have the tell-tale diagonal stripes that indicate where the trees have previously been "tapped" (the bark was scraped to make the rubbery sap "bleed" from the tree).

Continue on this road enjoying the scenery until you get to the cache site. After you have found the cache, you will probably need to do a U-turn and return the way you came, unless you are driving a 4-wheel drive. At the time of placing the cache, the bridge by the cache site had been replaced but the road on the other side was in very poor condition, requiring 4-wheel drive to get up the hill.

If you do continue on, the road improves as soon as you get to the top of the hill. You will follow the Sungai Kinta (Kinta River) and travel past a small lake, horse stud and farms before joining major roads again near Tanjung Rambutan. Watch out for motorcycles again!

The cache is hidden near the bridge by the river. As the GPS reading is not accurate, we have given you a decent hint below. If you continue along the path that the cache is hidden beside, you will walk through bamboo groves which the local Orang Asli people obviously harvest. After a 5 or 10 minute walk, when you arrive at where the path is washed out, you can continue on down onto the river bed (when the river is at its normal low level). From here, you can pick your way across the rocks upstream for a few more minutes and you will get to some larger rocks and a series of rocky swimming holes. Be very careful if it is raining as the rocks may be slippery and river levels may rise suddenly. Please throw some leaf litter back over the cache area to make it look natural before you leave.

Enjoy this peaceful little corner of Malaysia which StopTheWorld are blessed to have right at our doorstep.
