Geocache Description:

  • angel  It's back! The original plaque commemorating Ingersoll's mammoth cheese was struck by a truck in the winter of 2005. It was sent for repairs, but got misplaced, so the town of Ingersoll recently welcomed this replacement, which was unveiled on Oct. 24, 2016.

It's the Big Cheese's sequicentennial! In 1866, a team of Oxford County cheese makers worked for 8 days and used 35 metric tonnes of milk to create a mammoth cheddar cheese. The Big Cheese, which weighed 3311 kg. and was 6.4 m. in circumference, was sent to the New York State Fair as a promotional gimmick, and then was shipped across the Atlantic to England. The Victorian section of this beautiful building was originally the home of the Harris family. James Harris, whose cheese factory was located on this site, was involved in the creation of the Big Cheese. The cache is located near the plaque, and they are both on private property, but you are welcome to come in to find the cache, and to view the plaque and the grounds during daylight hours. It is “winter-friendly”. You will need to bring a pen to sign the log. You may also want to visit another cheese-related cache, located nearby: "Ingersoll Moo-seum". The museum has a full-size replica of the Big Cheese, and beside the museum, there is a playground built on a cheese theme.
