Martinho de Tours foi um militar, monge, bispo e santo católico, nascido a 316 e falecido a 397.

A lenda de São Martinho conta que certo dia, um soldado romano chamado Martinho, estava a caminho da sua terra natal. O tempo estava muito frio e Martinho encontrou um mendigo cheio de frio que lhe pediu esmola. Martinho rasgou a sua capa em dois e deu uma metade ao mendigo. De repente o frio parou e o tempo aqueceu. Este acontecimento acredita-se que tenha sido a recompensa por Martinho ter sido bom para com o mendigo.

A tradição do Dia de São Martinho é assar as castanhas e beber o vinho novo, produzido com a colheita do verão anterior.

Por norma, na véspera e no Dia de São Martinho o tempo melhora e o sol aparece, tal como sucedeu com São Martinho. Este acontecimento é conhecido como o Verão de São Martinho.

São Martinho tornou-se no padroeiro dos mendigos, alfaiates, peleteiros, soldados, cavaleiros, curtidores, restauradores e produtores de vinho.
