"Capping", a process required of every human 16 years old and up, was instituted by the Tripods to suppress the normal violent tendencies of human behavior. It's greater reason, however, was to prevent rebellion, allow for mind-control and mind-reading, and to subjegate human to service to the Tripod needs. Will and his friends rebel against this forced ceremony and spend the entire series trying to escape becoming victims of it.
