This cache is placed at a very special location for me. I have recently discovered that my Scottish ancestors, who incidentally are Græmes and originally from Perthshire, moved to Shaldon, Devon in the 1850s. They bought the house and grounds known as Fonthill which is but a stones throw from where you will find this wee box. At this place is a bench and a sundial, although the dial itself is no longer there. This is the spot where a donkey called Dapple breathed his last breath in c.1873. Dapple had been rescued some fifteen years previously by Colonel Græme and whenever the family coach went out, for example to go to church in Stokeinteignhead on a Sunday, Dapple would trot along behind.
Sadly in 2012, the family had to sell Fonthill but they are still in Shaldon, obviously very attached to the place. It certainly is a fascinating town with its wonderful narrow lanes and colourful seaside houses. The beach is sandy and red and there are many small boats bobbing around on the harbour waves. In the distance is Teignmouth and there is a small passenger ferry between the two. Enjoy!
