Have You Orienteered Here - Rock Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

TheCur8or: As this cache has been out of action for too long, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

Orienteering is a sport where participants have a map and run against the clock. They navigate their way to certain points known as controls where they "punch" the control. This proves you have been to the correct place. Along with the map the participant is provided with a control description to aid in locating the control.

A rock may be mapped if large enough, and therefore a feature that may have a control place beside it. This cache is stretching the concept of what constitutes a rock.

In term 4 of every year the Counties Manukau Orienteering Club runs a Summer Series each Wednesday in the early evening. The courses are located in parks around Pukekohe with this park and surrounds being one of them. These are designed as a fun family activity with the simpler course being done by many young families. This series is a great introduction to the sport which shares many similarities to Geocaching. Participating in this event nutured one of the boys interests leading to him now competing nationally at secondary school level. There is great debate in our house as to which is better, geocaching or orienteering.

Over the summer the nearby facility is open if you wish to cool off.
