This beautiful trail will take you through some of Bergen County's Marshlands and Mudflats.
This trail sits atop a dike originally built as a PSE&G service road in the 1920's. By the 1990's, the dike had eroded to the point where it became impassable. Using 30,000 tons of stone the road elevation was raised 2½ feet to accommodate pedestrians and service vehicles.
This trail closed down once again after Hurricane Sandy after it was eroded and in most areas non existent. After quite some time, they rebuilt it and replaced some of the high tension power lines. In October 2016, the trail was reopened to the public.
Surrounded by 400 acres of tidal wetlands, the trail provides spectacular opportunities for bird watching, wildlife observation and has become popular with joggers and bike riders. There are several whirlpools in the water during high tide.
There was other caches here in the past. But all were lost/damaged due to the rising waters and damage to the path. With these new caches, rising waters should not be a issue.
