The Malibu stalled out and steam started hissing from the radiator. We climbed out and pulled the hood up to see if it was dead. “We could push it,” one of us suggested. The lights from a gas station up ahead gave a small hope that our night wouldn’t end on this dark road. Across the way an old creepy house loomed. “Wasn't that the haunted house,” someone asked. A scream shredded the darkness and we all looked at each other. “Uh, maybe we should just get to the station,” I said. We started for the safety of the lights. A dull moan began to rise around us. I looked back up the road to see if maybe another car was coming, but what I saw froze me solid. People had started coming up onto the darkness of the road. There were dozens of them. They were shambling toward us, moaning and gasping with a desperate hunger. We started moving faster toward the station. The shapes behind us sped up as well. As soon as we reached the edge of the light from the canopy, we heard another scream from the house, then a chorus of gurgling, bloody screams from the road. They had started to chase us. A window in the gas station shattered and a rotting form of a man was climbing out. One of the girls screeched and fled around the back of the station. I followed into the dark as I heard the rustling feet quicken toward us. A graveyard lay scattered behind the station and I ran through, dodging crumbling headstones. I tripped over a hole in the ground and hit my head against a marble statue of an angel. I lay on my side feeling the world twist and move around me. The ground beneath me shifted and started lifting up. That got me up and I ran. Just past the graves stretched a junkyard. Heaps of broken and dead cars piled everywhere. A scream came from ahead and I ran towards my friend. Rounding a corner I saw her swing a pipe and strike one of the shambling forms in the skull and heard a crunch. She looked up at me and screamed again, “I think they are all dead!” I spun around and saw dozens of corpses coming into the greasy lights strung up in the junkyard. I backed over towards my friend and felt her hand grab mine. “Look,” she pointed. A black car sat idling by the only building we could see. The trunk was open and a light shone out of it, green and sickly. We ran toward it and saw something glowing under a blanket. “What was that?” she asked as we jumped into the front seat. “Let’s just get out of here,” I shouted. A gurgle from the back seat made me swing around. The bloody jaw was the last thing I saw...
