This area used to be overgrown with noxious weeds. A lot of work has been done by Tauranga City Council and Otumoetai College to clear the weeds and plant New Zealand natives.
Jenny Lascelles was the Head of Biology at Otumoetai College for several years during the seventies. She was a highly respected Science & Biology teacher and was always concerned about environmental issues. Sadly, Jenny passed away in the late seventies from cancer and she left money for trees to be planted in the school gulley. These native trees were purchased and planted in 1978-1979 and include species such as rimu, kahikatea, pohutukawa and titoki. During the 35 or so years since they were planted they have grown very well and some of the trees have reached heights of 15-20m, creating an attractive woodland habitat and drawing in a wide range of bird species, both native and exotic. Jenny's vision continues with the ongoing program in the gulley. The container is a small camouflagued pill bottle with room for small items. Bring your own pen.
