North Gardens is a section of the parkland surrounding Lake Wendouree. It is located just north of the Botanic Gardens. There are many iconic structures within the North Gardens such as the Sound Shell. Built in 1962 the Sound Shell is currently used as a stage for Christmas Carrols and the odd concert every few years. However it is not nearly used as much is it used to be in years gone by. The North Gardens is also the grounds of an old Zoo and the remains of which can be seen nearby with the odd looking concrete structures which used to be part of the habitat/enclosures of various animals. Also of note nearby is two lines of trees near Gilles St which lined an old spur railway. I have also heard that there used to be a power station near this location many years ago too however I have not been able to track down its location. Its quite hard to imagine all the things that used to be here which have long gone. Replaced by a large open lawn area used as carparking for local festivals in the nearby botanic gardens.
