Geocache Description:

Felton Empire Road has quite a few interesting and unusual benchmarks, including several of the "spike" types. These are iron spikes driven into large redwood stumps (and other things like railroad ties) and usually marked with paint or some kind of flag or other marker. I had a lot of fun finding the benchmarks along this road, so I'm marking some of the more interesting (and safe) ones with caches.

This cache marks the location of nearby benchmark HT3622, a spike near the base of a very large redwood stump nearby. It's also the location of a "secret trailhead" that leads up the hill into Fall Creek, where it connects with an unmarked trail and several other great caches. The cache is in a safe turnout that's best accessed on your way uphill (heading west). You're looking for a pretty generic pill bottle within two feet of the benchmark.

To find the benchmark, head up the trail about 40 feet and look for the very tall redwood stump on your left. The benchmark is near the base of the stump, facing the road. It's easy to spot the remains of a circle of pink paint around it. There's also a photo in the gallery. You can log it if you're interested in logging benchmarks. Happy hunting!

Congrats to SCStroller on the FTF!
