Geocache Description:

A traditional cache in the underpopulated region of Orgovány. You can drive to the hill by car, but offroad car recommended. (The last part of the road is sandy and there could be tree branches extending onto the road.)

HUN:

Az Orgoványi tanyavilágban található ez a kis domb, mely a fehér terror áldozatainak állít emléket.

1919-ben a Tanácsköztársaság bukása után a Horthy korszak kezdetén Héjjas Iván vezetésével ezen a helyen végeztek ki több zsidót illetve a Tanácsköztársaságban szerepet vállaló személyt. A különböző adatok szerint 20-30 emberrel végeztek különös kegyetlenséggel.

1989 előtt a nemcsak Orgoványról, hanem a szomszédos településekről is buszokon hozták az iskolásokat minden év március 21-én a "Dicső Tanácsköztársaságra" emlékezni. Én magam is álltam még itt kisdobosként. Ma már az emlékhely nem nagyon látogatott.

A dombon egy furcsa madárszerű alakot ábrázoló szobor látható.

ENG:

This little hill is a memorial place for the victims of the white terror.

At the end of World War I, the political configuration of the Hungarian state was forced into swift and radical change.

In this volatile atmosphere, the nation’s fledgling efforts at modern democracy failed. In March 1919, a Communist cadre took advantage of the political instability, seized power and proclaimed a new Hungarian Soviet Republic. Although it was ostensibly led by a Social Democratic-Communist coalition, it was controlled behind the scenes by the Communist leader Béla Kun. Kun’s regime lasted less than four months.

In the south of the country, an alternative government formed to replace the failed communist regime. Leading the armed wing of this new government was Admiral Miklós Horthy, one-time Admiral of the Austro-Hungarian Navy.

Horthy named his new force the National Army. Among the officers who answered Horthy’s call were ultra-nationalist soldiers who mounted a campaign of atrocities to avenge the victims of the Communists, to suppress any lingering loyalty to Communist principles; and to frighten the population into obedience to the new order.

These units, commonly known as the "White Guard," carried out a campaign of murder, torture and humiliations. They also preyed upon peasants, upon the politically liberal, and very often upon Jews, who were broadly blamed for the Revolution because much of the Communist leadership had been Jewish.

The most notorious of unit commanders was Pál Prónay, who by all accounts brought a particularly sadistic pleasure to his work. Others included Gyula Ostenberg, Anton Lehar, and Ivan Hejjas, who focused his efforts on the Hungarian plain around the town of Kecskemet. Their detachments were part of the National Army, but tended to function as personal battalions following a fanatical loyalty to their commanders.

The most of the killings thougth to be happened here by Ivan Hejjas and his squad. They brutally murdered 20-30 people in the underpopulated region of Orgovány.

On the hill you see a birdlike sculpture.

There were annual celebrations at the hill in the time of the socialism (before 1989). I remember I stood there in my uniform.
