The lake, is situated to the north of Jaipur city. It has a water spread area of 300 acres (121 ha) and is enclosed by the Aravalli hills on the north, west and eastern sides, while the southern side consists of plains that are intensely inhabited. There is the Nahagarh Fort (Nahargarh meaning home of tigers) in the hills that provides a commanding view of the Man Sagar Lake and the Jal Mahal palace, in addition to a beautiful view of the city of Jaipur. The lake was created by constructing a dam across the Darbhawati River, between Khilagarh hills and the hilly areas of Nahargarh, in the 16th century.

तपते रैगिस्तान के बीच बसे इस महल में गरमी नहीं लगती, क्योंकि इसके कई तल पानी के अंदर बनाए गए हैं। इस महल से पहाड़ और झील का ख़ूबसूरत नज़ारा भी देखा जा सकता है। चांदनी रात में झील के पानी में इस महल का नजारा बेहद आकर्षक होता है। जलमहल अब पक्षी अभ्यारण के रूप में भी विकसित हो रहा है। जल महल के नर्सरी में 1 लाख से ज्यादा वृक्ष लगे हुए हैं। दिन रात 40 माली पेड़ पौधों की देखभाल में लगे रहते हैं। यह नर्सरी राजस्थान का सबसे उंचे पेड़ों वाला नर्सरी है। यहां अरावली प्लांट, ऑरनामेंटल प्लांट, शर्ब, हेज और क्रिपर की हजारों विभिन्नताएँ मौजूद हैं। यहाँ के १५0 वर्ष पुराने पेड़ों को ट्रांसप्लांट कर नया जीवन दिया गया है। हर साल यहां डेट पाम, चाइना पाम और बुगनबेलिया जैसे शो प्लांट को ट्रांसप्लांट किया जाता है
