Geocache Description:

This is one of a handful of Letterbox Hybrid Geocaches around southern Manitoba.  It is a winter friendly easy to find cache a short hike from parking to the west at the intersection of Agassiz Ave and Patterson Drive. Hike along the north tree line between the cemetery and the cultivated land and you will stay on municipal property.

Letterboxing got its start in 1854 in Dartmoor England when guide James Perrott left a bottle behind at a remote location on the moor.  Adventurers whom he guided into the area were encouraged to leave behind one of their calling cards as proof they made the journey to the site.

In 1888 the bottle was replaced with a tin.  People would leave self addressed postcards as evidence they had made the hike.

In 1905 the tin was replaced with a zinc box and instead of postcards the first logbook was put in place so visitors could sign the log proving they had reached the remote area of the moor.

In 1907 a rubber stamp was added so that persons who found the cache could keep proof that they reached the site.

Letterboxing was slow to develop with only 3 such sites being placed over 88 years.  The activity then spread to North America where it experienced expanded growth.  There is some who suggest that Letterboxing may have influenced the developement of Geocaching.

Enjoy the cache.  There is a rubber stamp included in the cache but you will need to bring your own ink pad.  You can stamp your own personal Letterbox Hybrid log book.  If you have your own personal stamp please stamp this cache's logbook.  But if you don't there is a pencil in the cache so you can sign the logbook.

The cache has a small prize suitable to the cache for the First to Find.  There are also some small tradeable items too.  Please do not remove the stamp though.  It is part of the lettebox.

Enjoy the cache.
