Geocache Description:

Another in the BIRD series of caches.  This one is in the Yarramundi area.

Please take care with children as this road can be busy at times.

As always be aware of snakes on hot days.

The Superb Fairy-wren is also known as the Blue Wren. It is a small bird about 14cm that likes to flit about in low scrub and also can be seen hopping along the ground.

The Male has a blue cap and back, and blue-black throat and chest and grey-white underparts and a blue tail. The Female is mouse brown with whitish underparts and red-brown eye-ring and brown tail.  (The "Eclipse" male looks like the female, but it has a blue tail).  Where most birds tails are horizontal, Wrens tails stick up.

Their call is a musical trill that you can hear before you see them.  Their distribution is the south east of Australia.  They can be seen in scrub, on tracks, around ponds and rivers, and even in backyards.

We usually see them around the Yarramundi area, especially in the areas near the bridge over the Nepean River.
