Tafoni are small cave-like features that appear in granular rock such as sandstone, granite and sandy limestone. They are often smooth, rounded and networked, appearing in groups on hillsides or cliffs.
Tafoni are most abundantly found in intertidal, semi-arid and arid climates, but can be seen in all climate types. They are usually formed by weathering such as salt weathering, cementation or freeze-thaw erosion.
The rocks here are granite and have been eroded by chemical and physical weathering resulting from moisture in the soil beneath the rocks infiltrating the rock from below, altering the chemical structure of the rock and causing it to disintegrate from within.
Coupling these processes with continual temperature changes and the action of wind and rain causes further degeneration of the rock into these wonderfully imposing, yet quite stunning structures you see before you.
