Additional information can be found on the WV Botanic Garden Website

In 1912, the water reservoir opened up, supplying fresh water to the city of Morgantown.

In 1969, the reservoir was closed and eventually the 28 acre basin was drained. However, some towers and markings remain, maintaining the site's mark in Morgantown's history.

"This was a major source of water when the Mon River was too polluted, when the wells weren't providing enough water, they were polluted because people had out houses close to their wells. So you needed to have good clean water for Morgantown to develop," said Barb Howe of the WV Botanic Garden.

The area has since been leased to the West Virginia Botanic Garden. You can visit the garden for free. It is open dawn to dusk.

For this cache you will gain the needed information about the Garden from the interpretive signs located at the coordinates posted below.

The gate to the lower parking lot is open on Saturdays and national holidays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Sunday afternoons from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (weather permitting). Otherwise you may park in the upper lot and walk down to the rest of the garden.

The hike for this cache can be about 1.5 miles long, (or a little more), depending on the trails you take. The terrain is also very level with some trails even being paved. In researching this cache I spend around 2 hours walking the trails, reading the signs and otherwise enjoying the area.

Cache is not at the posted coordinates.
