Geocache Description:

This is a simple cache and grab in downtown Ellicott City

There used to be a bridge here!  It was a strong pedestrian bridge made of steel and wood and was designed to last a long time.  However, it was no match for the raging Tiber River during the Great Ellicott City Flood of July 30, 2016.  If you look across the way toward Old Frederick Rd, you can see one of the two I-beams that supported the bridge.  The lazy little stream before you overflowed its banks, rose above the stone retaining walls and swept the bridge away.  The water flowed into the parking lot, flooding the first floor of the  Mexican restaurant up the hill to your left and wiping out the kitchen and basement prep area of French restaurant across the way to your right.  Several cars were swept from the parking lot into the river.  But Ellicott City is slowly recovering, the sounds of hammers and saws are constant and one by one the business' are reopening.

The Cache:  The cache is a micro, just a park and grab.  You can park within 10 feet of the cache. Be careful of muggles and BYOP.   We placed this cache to bring people back to downtown Ellicott City, to highlight the revival of the area, and show the awesome destructive force of unconstrained water.

UPDATE

Mother Nature did her worst again on downtown Ellicott City in May 2018. According to the workers at our favorite restaurant, the water was higher than in 2016, but their damage was less than two years ago. That was likely because of the materials they used when they recovered from the 2016 flood.

Main Street is open and Parking Lot D is also open. The fence that held the cache container was wiped out, but has been replaced with a new split rail fence. The cache container is now back and ready to be found.
