La penisola del Gargano contiene alcune sorprendenti geologia! L'erosione ha modellato il calcare calcareo che costituisce la penisola in grotte, archi, scogliere, e altro ancora. The Gargano peninsula contains some amazing geology! Erosion has shaped the calcareous limestone that makes up the peninsula into caves, arches, cliffs, and more. A sea stack is a geological formation consisting of a steep and often vertical column of rock that is in, or near a coast, formed by erosion. The Pizzomunno Sea Stack is 25 meters (82 feet) tall and is a prominent geological formation of the area.
There is a Legend as to how the sea stack formed, but this earthcache will explain the geological process. Legend tells the story of two young people in love. When mermaids killed Pizzomunno’s partner, he was petrified with grief and became the white monolith.
The area you are in is comprised of horizontally-bedded, marly limestone rock. It belongs to the Peschici and Scaglia Formations. It is very common for sea stacks to form from this type or rock. The limestone here is of medium hardness, which means it has medium resistance to erosion. Hard rock like granite erodes in different ways, and soft rock like clay tend to slump and erode too quickly to form stacks.
The limestone here is eroded mainly by waves and wind, although there are other processes as well. The formation process of a sea stack usually begins when the sea erodes small cracks in a headland and opens them. Those cracks then erode into caves. The caves then erode through the headland and usually form an arch. This arch then collapses, leaving the pillar of harder rock standing alone. harder rock standing alone.
