Geocache Description:

700 year old Coln St Aldwyns Norman Cotswold church was originally dedicated to St Athelwine until 1535 when, under Reformation, it was re-dedicated to the rather gruesomely named Decolation (beheading) of St John The Baptist.

The building is constructed of rubble and ashlar, The South entrance porch is 19th century but shelters a particularly fine Norman doorway with chevron work and some remarkable dragon-like heads adorning the hood which may reflect Saxon origins.

The chancel with it's lancet windows and the two lower stages of the massive tower are 13th century.

The top of the tower which has crocheted pinnacles and a pierced parapet is 15th century. The West and North walls were rebuilt in the 14th century.

One famous clergyman to serve at St Johns was John Keble (served 1792-1866) who was born in Fairford. His father, Rev John Keble was the vicar for 40 years. John Jnr was a student at Corpus Christi College, Oxford and, after a brilliant academic performance there, became a fellow at Oriel College. While still at Oxford he took Holy Orders in 1815 and became a curate to his father. However, Keble was destined for greater things than a sleepy parish living and wrote "The Christian Year" arguably the most popular volume of verse written in the 19th century, which appeared in 1827 and was met with unparralelled acceptance and subsequent acclaim. As a result, Keble was appointed tot he Chair of Poetry at Oxford in 1831, a post he held until 1841.

Keble college, Oxford was founded in his name in 1870.

The stained glass windows to the side of the altar are dedicated to the Reverand John Keble and to John Keble Jnr.
