Searching for this cache will land you at the Port of Redwood City's beautiful public waterfront.
The Port of Redwood City, located 18 nautical miles south of San Francisco, is the only deepwater port in south San Francisco Bay. In the 1850's during Northern California's Gold Rush, San Francisco and its surrounding area was growing quickly. The tremendous demand for lumber made the hills of the peninsula the prime harvesting source for redwood. A creek was discovered that carved a path directly from the hills to the Bay. This allowed a water highway to emerge which enabled the logs to easily be transported by barge to San Francisco where it was milled into lumber. This waterfront became known as The Port of Redwood City.
The Port is host to several public events and festivals during the year. Visits from historic ships and sailing vessels are a big attraction each year as is the decorated boat parade on "Opening Day". It is home to the Spinnaker Sailing Club and often you might spot crew boat races, Hawaiian Outrigger canoe races, and sailing regattas. The annual PortFest event is held in October and is a day is filled with music, bands, boat races, food and art vendors, Port tours, and a fun kid's zone.
Take in the peaceful surroundings of the Port and enjoy the nature and indigenous animal and avian creatures that make it its home.
