The Old Guysborough Railroad was to be developed through a corridor of publicly
owned land extending from Guysborough to Pictou County near Sunnybrae. This
railway line once held great economic promise for future development. It would
run from one of the greatest coal fields in Nova Scotia past one of the best
natural harbours on the Atlantic seaboard - Country Harbour - thus creating a...
large potential for industrial development and trade. It was widely hoped the
Guysborough Railway would provide impetus to many an industry from fishing to
the lumber industry.
Despite efforts of generations of residents and the promises of multi-level
governments throughout the years 1897-1939, the dream for an "iron road" was
never realized in Guysborough County.
