< Ascetic Kakumei >
Kakumei was an ascetic of Ontake-kyo -- a Shinto religion deifying Mt. Ontake, which is one of Japan's highest mountains.
Mt. Ontake used to be open only to Ontake-kyo's ascetics who had made very tough practices and its ordinary believers were not allowed to climb the holy mountain. In 1785, Kakumei started to fight against the Ontake-kyo community, and finally this old discipline was abolished and any believers got allowed to climb the mountain in 1792, which was 6 years after Kakumei's death.
Kakumei once came to Makisaka -- this shrine's location, and took a rest at a teahouse here. He then stayed here for three years, prayed for the local people, and became very popular among them. After Kakumei died, the teahouse master deified Kakumei here, which is said the origin of this Kakumei Shrine(*1).

＜覚明行者＞
覚明神社（*2）は教派神道のひとつ、御嶽教の神社で、覚明行者が祀られています。
江戸時代後期、覚明行者の時代にはまだ御嶽登山は厳しい御嶽潔斎行（重精進）を経た者など限られた道者にしか認められていませんでした。そこで、覚明行者は教団の掟に逆らい、天明５年（1785年）一般の信者を伴って登拝を繰り返し、牢につながれたりまでしました。しかし、諦めることなく覚明行者は登拝を繰り返すとともに、翌年には黒沢口の登山道の回収にも着手しました。
覚明行者は結局志半ばでその生涯を閉じましたが、没後その行跡が認められ、寛政４年（1792年）には、厳しい修業を経た者でなくても御嶽登山が許されるようになりました（軽精進）。
ある時、覚明行者が御嶽山に向かう途中に、当時槙坂地区のこの地にあった茶屋で休息を取りました。そして、茶屋の主人に乞われて行った祈祷が評判となり、結局３年間この地に留まることとなりました。
覚明行者の死後、茶屋の主人古根佐次兵衛がそのそばに覚明行者を祀ったのが、この「覚明神社」の始まりであると伝えられています。
