English (mostly Google translate)
The serpentine is not a mineral, but a group of minerals with similar characteristics, common in mafic and ultramafic metamorphic rocks. Serpentine means the polymorphic modifications of the compound Mg3(Si2O5)(OH)4.
The term "serpentine" was awarded for the first time since Georgius Agrigola in 1564, a term derived from the Latin word "serpens" = snake, in allusion to the snake-like appearance of serpentine rocks skin. There are three important mineral polymorphs of serpentine: antigorite, chrysotile and lizardite.
The differences between the various varieties are very limited and are virtually indistinguishable in macroscopic samples. However chrysotile form above asbestiform masses (fibrous) while antigorite tends to form criptocrystalline masses, sometimes with lamellated crystals. All varieties of serpentine are characterized by the same crystal structure; a repetition of two layers, one tetrahedral (SiO4) and one octahedral (Mg (OH) 2). Based on the distortion and the arrangement of these two layers we will have the different varieties of serpentine. The minerals of the serpentine group are secondary minerals, which are formed during deuteric processes, hydrothermal and alteration of mafic and ultramafic rocks; metamorphic environment in the coil can also be formed in the contact halos, at the expense of carbonate rocks bobbins into forsterite.
This fine material has different color varieties (from the more marked green to gray), due to the former quarries or obtained depending on the processing and surface finishing performed, is a valued material for its refined aesthetic qualities and its physical properties, which give it great resistance to the action of atmospheric agents and, accordingly, a remarkable durability in time.
Esthetically the serpentine is a very versatile stone, suitable to be treated in several finishes and used in several ways, especially in architecture. In this square you can admire a wonderful example of using this material, thanks to which the "simple" pavement of a public space becomes, for a more careful eye, storytelling tool, as masterfully described below:
“A romantic idea subliminally guide the thinking behind the design of this Italian square, Piazza San Fermo in Almè, in the province of Bergamo: that is the image unconsciously widespread that wants the medieval architecture well accompanied by a rich natural presence, spontaneous and lush vegetation.
On the square is in fact the figure of the medieval tower, tamed for civil use over time, whose characters were as restrained and gagged, when juxtaposed to punctual tree species in neighboring courtyards.
The architect Attilio Stocchi, in this case together with Dimitri Chatzipetros, thinks about a green meadow in front of the tower, made of a typical material of the Italian public spaces, such as that stone.
This is therefore the most instinctive intervention genesis, let's call it precisely the idea. It is then immediately followed by the translation of the idea to the project, according to the dictates of good technique and the art of building.
Stocchi explains how his approach to the project for the public space coincides with the discovery of historical reasons relating to the specific space - what he calls the pretext - and in parallel the perception of geographic content, natural and environmental falling however in the context of the sphere. In this case the medieval presence is both a pretext and contextual.
It constitutes in fact a pretext for the feelings it evokes, but provides context for the set of constructive knowledge.
In the tower the original cornerstones are still a landmark: at the base of the vertices of the current walls on square base, symbolically bring with them, translated in simple gestures of work, knowledge stereotomic medieval, and with it the mathematical knowledge applied to the technical constructive In the construction of the stone lawn designers also looked for the variety as in nature, and how the decline in nature according to scientific rule.
Single serpentine from Val Malenco, which is one local stone, given the short distances from equally Lombard quarries; choose it in three types: Classic, Victoria and Jade, in turn treated differently according to the blasting surface processing, hammering and water-jet.
Combining type and processing so we count nine possible variants.
These variants are then multiplied by crossing these two data with the dimensional one of each individual plate, referring to their sides to the laws of the primes.
Even alternation between the plates is driven by the simple rule that the sum of two prime numbers and subtracting a unit, you get a new prime number. Well as the joint between the shutter elements he participates in the set of numerical references. Stem from 125 different plates, arranged to record on a grid for x-axis and ordered oriented in the attitude of the main sides of the square.
The larger sheets are concentrated at the center of public space; instead become thicker on the sides, head opening of the routes - the square, as designed for planimetrically, it seems really to trace the patterns of Camillo Sitte. The seats are designed in iroko wood and bronze supports. Completing the pavement surface gratings formed in the same stone material, the flush lighting, the arboreal presences, and various inserts for the maintenance of the underlying networks.
Green, in varying degrees, is definitely the connotation of this space to stay more imprinted in the mind of the cross and qualifies.
The term viridis, in the Latin language still in the medieval use, as they prefer to designers, contextualizes even more surgery, historicizing the stones already in terms of new pose. It must not be secondary, for green and for the reading of this, the fact of finding in their magenta color complementary: that in fact, descended from theory to practice, the combination of tones determined by chlorophyll, those pink to red brick that now we are used to visually and mentally to give the pre-Renaissance building.
The chemistry of the elements become stone in the millennia and now encased in the pavement slabs, it leads them variously to shine in combination with the reflections of the sun and the water falling, with the ways of the volcanic gems and emeralds, so even touching the magical ropes and the fantastic elements of medieval literature.
It is as it took up the romantic idea of the Old Approach by John Ruskin, that it is nature that give true glory to the buildings, to give that golden patina of time in which we must seek the true light, the true color, and the real gem of architecture.”

- Where is the quarry from which the serpentine used for the paving of the square in obtained?
- For slab finishing we used three different processes: What are they? Search three square plates that have been worked in those three ways and try to explain what you see and how it changes the surface of the stone, if you want, optionally, with the help of photographs
- In this square we have the opportunity to see, pratically, a large number of sectioned pieces of serpentine, so you can see its conformation: can you identify which sub-group belongs the coil used to pave the square??
