Anthony of Padua was born in Lisbon in 1195, and became a renowned preacher in the Order of St Francis of Assisi.
A famous story of St Anthony was when he found himself in the town of Rimini on the Italian Adriatic coast. Entering the town to preach, he found himself not welcome and the townsfolk wouldn’t listen to him.
Frustrated, but undeterred, Anthony left the town and headed to the nearby river where he called out to the fish to listen, seeing as he couldn’t get humans to. The fish gathered at the side of the river and listened as he preached to them, and as he went on the number of fish increased, all intently gazing at him.
After some time, the villagers came out to witness the miracle, and then invited Anthony to return to the town where he was allowed to continue preaching. The villagers listened and many converted.
