In 1881, then King Menelik of Shewa moved his capital from Ankober to Entoto. The location provided a favourable strategic position and a useful base for military operations. However, the immediate area around Entoto did not encourage the founding of a town due to the lack of firewood and water. Thus, the settlement started in the valley. The king's third wife Taitu is considered to be the founder of Addis Ababa, "the new flower". She built a house for herself near the Filwoha hot mineral springs. Addis Ababa was declared the new capital in 1889 when King Menelik was crowned Emperor Menelik II, his wife's house became the new Imperial Palace.

Note by the owner (July 2019):
After four years in Ethiopia, my time in the 'Land of Origins' came to an end in July 2019. I have done my best to widen and maintain the net of geocaches in the country, but now need to call on my fellow cachers for help: If you venture out to search for this cache, please take a replacement container with you, just in case the original is gone. - Sundowner74 |
