This is the only church in Northumberland dedicated to St. Oswin. Between 644 and 651, Oswin was King of Deira (the southern half of Northumbria). His cousin Oswy ruled the adjoining northern half, Bernicia. Following several disputes between them, their opposing armies met for battle near Catterick in 651 and Oswin, whose men were outnumbered, fled shortly afterwards. He was betrayed to Oswy and slain at Gilling near Richmond. He was later buried in the Priory at Tynemouth.
The church itself is from the late Victorian period. Prior to its being built in 1886, the residents of Wylam had to travel to Ovingham. Architected by Robert James Johnson, the interior is worth a look with some lovely stained-glass windows as well as some impressive oak carvings.

The published coordinates will take you to the Lychgate which dates from 1903, within which you will find some ornamental carvings in Latin whose text will lead you to your goal.
