Geocaching and using navigational skills may be a metaphor for overcoming obstacles and discovering unique individual skills and abilities. Students from OPRFHS reflect on unique abilities and share personal reflections on how they identify with their disability- what assets, challenges, or obstacles their disability may present in their life.
Log and pencil are included in the cache.
It is our intention to bring together classes of students with mixed abilities to collaborate on activities related to navigating our world- using map and compass, and geocaching. Students from two different classes specifically collaborated on this project called Navigating My Abilities. One class of students was specifically studying concepts in Earth Science including mapping, orienteering, and using GPS. Another class of students was studying navigating in the community. Ultimately we hope that the activity will be a metaphor for overcoming obstacles and challenges that we all face- individually and collectively. This experience resulted in a series of interactions including four mini field trips that not only lead to learning and practicing some unique navigational skills (using map and compass and gps), but culminated with some students dialoguing and learning about their new experiences and skills and overcoming obstacles or their disabilities.
In October of 2015 this Geocache was filled with tokens and artifacts chosen by students. The items placed in this geocache represent artifacts specifically chosen by individual students to represent something unique about each individual that they may have learned while participating in the experience of “Navigating My Abilities”.
There is a gift card to Starbucks for the FTF, and a trackable (please keep him mooooooving.) There is also lots of swag in the cache symbolically chosen by students. When you take something, please leave something- note, token, trackable.... as a symbol of your experience overcoming your own obstacles, challenges, or disability.
